cancelling device ties 3 cent rose (#65) to envelope.
Binghamton - 1863

Black target killer on 3 cent rose (#65).
Binghamton - 1864
BINGHAMTON/SEP/6/1864/N.Y. Black 25mm DCDS; Black 21x6mm "FREE". Manuscript "Giles W. Hotchkiss M.C."
Clear year date and slightly smaller CDS indicates either a new cancelling device
in use, or that the covers below with worn CDS were mailed later in the 1860's.
Free frank for member of Congress. Hotchkiss served in the 38th - 41st Congress.

BINGHAMTON/OCT/6/N.Y. 26mm Black DCDS; Thicker lines and letters and smudged year due to
wear of cancelling device. Black target killer on 3 cent rose (#65).
Binghamton - 1865: Forwarded with auxillary markings
BINGHAMTON/OCT/20/N.Y. 26mm Black DCDS; Black "Due 3" and "FORWARDED" in oval auxillary markings applied at
Binghamton prior to sending the letter back to Ithaca. Clear 1865 year date in the Ithaca
CDS documents that the wear of the year within the Binghamton cancelling device had taken
place by late 1865. Initial first class postage paid by the 3 cent pink on buff (#U35) envelope.
Binghamton - 1860's: Double Rate
BINGHAMTON/DEC/7/N.Y. 26mm Black DCDS; Thicker lines and letters and smudged year due to
wear of cancelling device. Black target killer on pair of 3 cent rose (#65)
paying twice the single rate.
